The formation of this Society has afforded us peculiar pleasure. The Young Men are the strength of any nation, and when they combine to promote the morals •of their country, they throw at once, not a ray but a beam of hope across her whole domain. Besides, it seems peculiarly appropriate that Young Men should unite their efforts for the good of Seamen. Who *re Seamen"! The largest part of them are Young Men whom a thousand circumstances have induced to try their fortune upon the deep. Without stopping here to attempt to decide in every case upon the wisdom of their choice, they are certainly a very importantclassofmen. Through their toils come a vast proportion of the wealth and comfort, and respectability of commercial nations. They are also in a peculiar manner their representatives throughout the world, as well as their defence and their safeguard. On the other hand probably no class of men besides are exposed to so many temptations, and placed in such imminent danger of losing their morals ;ind theirsouls. How rich a field docs their situation open for the benevolent enterprise of Young Men. Let them unilc together, and say to seamen from the heart, \ye are fellow-countrymen, we are of the same age, we have one interest, though our occupations may differ. And now we come to give you our hands. You shall find sympathy at home, and you must give a fair representation of your country abroad. You shall find Christian love at home, and you must take care of your souls and steer for Heaven. Let this be done as well as »aid, and it will soon be found, that there u yet sympathy in the heart of a sailor.
